What is the difference between Counseling and Therapy?
The words ‘counseling’ and ‘therapy’ are used interchangeably although they have some similarities. It is different in that counseling is short term and focuses on current concerns of a client while therapy also known as ‘psychotherapy’ deals with deeper issues by drawing insights from past experiences, personality and family dynamics.
How do I know whom to consult?
When deciding whether to seek help from a counselor, psychotherapist, psychologist, or psychiatrist depends on your specific needs and the nature of the issues you’re facing. This you can do by following 3 steps mentioned below:
Step 1- Identify Your Needs and Concerns ask yourself:
Are my issues related to daily stress, relationships, or life transitions? Do I experience symptoms of anxiety, depression, trauma, or compulsive behaviors? Am I seeking medication, formal diagnosis, or specialized therapy? What is the severity of my concerns—mild, moderate, or severe?
(This reflection will help narrow down the right kind of professional.)
Step 2 – Understand Who Can Help
General emotional support– Counselor or Psychotherapist for talk therapy
Complex symptoms or diagnosis – Clinical Psychologist for assessment and therapy
Medication and medical treatment- Psychiatrist for diagnosis and prescription
Uncertain or mixed concerns – Start with Counselor → escalate to Psychologist or Psychiatrist
Step 3: Consider Your Preferences-Do you prefer non-medical approaches first?Would you feel more comfortable with online or in-person therapy? Is finding someone who respects your language, culture, or background important?Do you need help with trauma, career stress, or relationships?
Your preferences matter—they shape your comfort and connection during treatment. Also note few mental health concerns require immediate assessment and medication according to its severity.
